Hiking Cathedral Rock

  • Save

Cathedral Rock is a popular hiking destination in Sedona, AZ, with gorgeous red rock views all around. It’s especially popular at sunrise and sunset, particularly in the summer when it’s too hot to hike in the middle of the day!

Like many hikes in the area, Cathedral Rock requires a Red Rock Pass to park ($5/day or $15/week). You can purchase these passes in the parking lot.

I’d recommend saving your Google Maps directions to the trailhead before driving over, since service is very limited once you’re by the trail!

Hike Information

  • Distance:
    1.2 miles each way
  • Elevation:
    744 ft
  • Time:
1-2 hours, depending on speed and time at the top!

The hike is rocky, and you’ll be scrambling to climb up, sometimes using your hands for help. For the entire hike, you’ll be heading towards the cool-looking Cathedral Rock. The trail is marked with these towers of smaller rocks in wired metal structures, so if you’re ever not sure where to go, just follow the tower of rocks!

I wanted to leave with enough time to spare before it got dark, so we left to head to the parking lot about 15 minutes before sunset. We got to see some beautiful colors and the golden hour glow, and we even witnessed a wedding celebration/dance party on the way down!
